Group 2: Language B
Modern Foreign Languages
If you enjoy learning languages, the IB offers the opportunity to learn a new language from scratch: we offer Japanese, Italian and Spanish. At the end of a Beginner’s course, you should be able to communicate in the language in both speaking and writing.
French, German and Spanish are also taught at Standard and Higher Level, without using a rigid syllabus. They are challenging and entertaining: you have the freedom to investigate independently any aspect of the culture that you enjoy, and you can write or speak on a wide variety of creative and interesting topics using various writing styles: newspaper, broadcast, diary etc. The text handling work is interesting and we encourage reading a variety of resources to help to work on the texts. There is no separate listening examination. You will learn to structure ideas which will prove an invaluable skill in Higher education.
Latin
If you have enjoyed studying Latin to GCSE level, the IB programme will enable you to extend your interest in the culture and language of the Roman people. You will build on your knowledge of the language as well as continue to discover the remarkable richness and freshness of Roman literature. The course will also provide opportunities for independent research, including a written project based upon an area of personal interest.
The course will not only deepen your understanding of the Latin language, but will give you a valuable understanding and appreciation of the people who have exerted such a direct and lasting influence upon European thought, art and culture. You should find the IB Latin course a most rewarding one.
