Chemistry
Chemistry at St. Helen’s is taught by six teachers in a large, thriving Department together with two lab technicians who provide excellent technical support.
We aim to: encourage and help each girl to reach her full potential in her study of Chemistry; provide continuity and progression from the beginning of Key Stage 3 through to A level or IB; and provide a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment for the study of Chemistry.
Practical work lies at the heart of the Chemistry Department’s scheme of work, but we also aim to enthuse our pupils by using a wide range of teaching materials including molecular models, audio visual resources, ICT and software packages. An example of a resource which is particularly popular with pupils is the use of balloons to teach about the shapes of atomic orbitals as well as valence shell electron pair repulsion theory and complex ion geometry in transition metal chemistry.
Both dual and triple award IGCSE is offered by the Department.
About 45% of the Sixth Form study Chemistry at either A level or IB and we pride ourselves on our excellent examination results, regardless of what course of study is chosen. Last year our 27 A level candidates achieved 18 A grades and 9 B grades whilst out of 8 IB candidates, five achieved a level 6 or 7.
A grounding in Chemistry is essential for those who wish to be involved in vet science, medicine, pharmacy, food sciences, mechanical and chemical engineering or material sciences, whilst the academic rigour of the subject at IB or A level also ensures that it provides a good grounding for less obvious career options such as accountancy and business.
The Department takes an active role in the extra-curricular life of the Science Department, with a chemical magic show, an inter-house blockbusters quiz and various other activities which take place at different times of the year.
