English

All girls study English up to Year 11, with all pupils taking IGCSEs in English and English Literature. In the Sixth Form we offer English Language and English Literature for AS/A2 level with all girls who take the International Baccalaureate taking English at either Higher or Standard Level.

We aim to encourage students to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of literature as well as the ability to read, understand and respond to all types of writing; construct and convey meaning in written language; work independently; and understand the spoken word and express themselves effectively in a variety of activities.

In the Sixth Form, girls studying English Language A level will have the opportunity to develop their creative writing skills further and to expand their knowledge of the language, how it is used and its history. English Literature students will be able to build on the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired at IGCSE to widen their reading and undertake advanced detailed research within the whole field of literary studies. IB students are offered the opportunity to study English literature in an international context and to compare and contrast the texts that they are studying.
