Economics

What will I learn?

  • How to develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life both nationally and globally.
  • How to apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real-world phenomena especially in the developing world.
  • How to analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of governments at national and international levels.
  • How to participate effectively in society as a global citizen, producer and consumer.

Economics will appeal to you if you:

  • Wish to pursue a career as an economist or in an economics-related profession.
  • Enjoy studying a subject that affects your own everyday life.
  • Want to keep your options open: Economics can be combined with a wide range of science, social science and humanities subjects.

At the end of the Economics course
Throughout the course you will learn a variety of transferable skills that will access a wide range of possible higher education and career opportunities.

  • Collecting and analysing economic information from different sources.
  • Development of written communication skills.
  • Development of problem-solving and evaluation skills.

These skills are in great demand by universities and employers. Economics combines well with a range of social science and humanities subjects and leads to university courses in areas such as law, accounting, business, politics and, of course, economics.
