Classics

The Classics Department teaches Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation. Teaching is supported by a range of activities outside the classroom, including:

  • visits to performances of classical plays
  • visits to museums and classical sites in Britain
  • talks given by university speakers
  • Sixth Form conferences on classical literature and culture
  • an annual study day on Greek and Roman society lead by the reconstruction society 'Live in History'
  • overseas trips (recently to Rome and the Bay of Naples)

Latin
All girls study Latin in Years 8 and 9 and it is a popular option for GCSE. The Cambridge Latin Course is used, together with its accompanying website. As well as providing pupils with a sound knowledge and understanding of the language, girls also learn about Roman society and how the Romans have influenced our history, literature, art and science.

In the Sixth Form, we offer Latin at both AS/A2 level and as part of the International Baccalaureate (Higher Level and Standard Level).

Greek
Greek is offered for beginners in Year 10 at GCSE and also as a non-examined course for AS level students in Year 12 as part of our enhancement curriculum. Students are able to discover not only the Greek language and how it works but also about the legacy of Ancient Greece itself.

Classical Civilisation
Classical Civilisation is offered at both GCSE and at A level. Pupils develop a knowledge and understanding of the societies of Ancient Greece and Rome and an awareness of the similarities and differences between these societies and that of the 21st century, and the influence of the classical world on modern society. They also develop an understanding and appreciation of Greek and Latin texts in translation.

Our next Open Morning is on Wednesday 24th June 2009.  Please click here for more details and to book a place.
