'Maternity Care in Developing Countries'

On Thursday 28th January Dr Tony Falconer, fellow and Senior Vice President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), visited St. Helen's to talk to a packed audience of students, staff and parents about the work of the RCOG International Office.

Dr Falconer’s talk was extremely thought-provoking and engaging, and it was clear that he is very passionate about the continent of Africa and the important work he is involved with there and in other parts of the developing world.

Over 535,000 women die in childbirth every year and 99% of these deaths are in developing countries. Yet, over 80% of these are preventable. The RCOG International Office, established in 2005, uses the experience and expertise of its global network of members and its partnerships with key organisations to contribute to improving sexual and reproductive health care, particularly in developing countries.

Dr Falconer spoke about the RCOG's work and some of its key initiatives and achievements, including fundraising activities to purchase specialist training equipment for midwives in developing countries.

He was joined by Mark Bassett, Head of Public Policies at BUPA, and Sophie Hime from the RCOG International Office.

We now look forward to our next after-school lecture on Thursday 11th February, EDGE-ing towards Amphibian Conservation, given by Helen Meredith from the Zoological Society of London.
