Welcome to Junior School at St. Helen's

Junior School is a vibrant community which houses Years 3 to 6, providing pupils with teaching and learning experiences second to none.  Pupils are inspired and challenged in order that they develop a love of learning, a sense of enquiry and are able to take responsibility for their own academic development.

At Junior School, learning is fun.  The curriculum is broadly based around the National Curriculum but it is greatly enriched, providing many opportunities for the pupils to develop their individual talents, ensuring a broad balanced learning experience for all and fostering academic excellence.

As well as the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, the girls learn History, Geography, Religious Education and Philosophy with ICT, DT, Art, Music and Drama being taught is specialised rooms.  French is also part of the curriculum for all girls in Junior School.  There is a strong emphasis on ICT and all classrooms have Smart Boards; with a fully equipped ICT room the girls very quickly become digital experts.

Below are some quotes from current Junior School pupils:

St. Helen’s is a good place to start your life. It teaches you lots of things and helps you to become independent.

St. Helen’s is a community of young, determined people of all shapes and sizes;  we all love the school in different ways. I love the school because it is not just a few buildings filled with teachers, it is like another home.

St. Helen’s is a great school for ICT. We have Smart Boards in most classrooms to interact with in our lessons. In our ICT Room we have over 23 computers. I have learnt lots of ICT techniques, like how to make a movie using Movie Maker. I made my movie with two other friends.  We had to take a number of photos and record our voices. We have also learnt how to use Powerpoint and we can use it in other lessons as well.  I enjoy playing map detectives and think ICT is fun.

Independent Learning Week is a good time to work with people you don’t usually play with or talk to. It is also a good time for having a go yourself and achieving things too. In our group, we had to find out what people were good at and then you were given a job. Sophie and I were researchers and we had to look up things on the Internet and in the library. Sometimes you can find it hard but there is always somebody on your group to help you and you always work it out. Sometimes if you are stuck you can ask the teacher and they ask you questions which help you work out your answer yourself.

St. Helen’s has boosted my confidence hugely and I was the witch in the school play, ‘The Wizard of Oz’. I used to be so shy.
