There is a lively Performing Arts programme at St Helen’s. Plays and concerts take place regularly throughout the year, and involve pupils from all Sections of the School.
In Little St Helen’s all the girls take part in the Christmas Plays, where the girls act and sing with great energy and confidence! The Little St Helen’s Dance Shows take place in the Spring Term, and are always a highlight of the year for the girls and their parents. Year 2 girls perform in the Musical Extravaganza in the Summer Term.
In Junior School the girls have a greater number of performance opportunities, ranging from the annual Gym and Dance Show (alongside Senior School girls) and Christmas Plays to the Year 6 play which provides a memorable ending to the girls’ time in Junior School. The Year 5 and 6 Choir performs in the School Carol Service every year and participate in the Autumn Concert, too.
Senior School girls have a wide range of opportunities to participate in musical and dramatic performances, whether on-stage as performers or behind the scenes as directors or members of the backstage technical crew.
We jointly produce annual plays and musical productions with Merchant Taylors’ School, with students from both schools getting involved as cast members or back stage crew. Recent examples include Romeo and Juliet and Cabaret. We also organise joint concerts every year in which the Joint Orchestra and Joint Choral Society perform.
We hold regular House Arts and Music Competitions in which the girls take responsibility for producing, directing and performing their House performances, combining art, dance, drama and music.
Our musicians also enjoy many opportunities to perform beyond the school: our choirs and instrumental ensembles perform biennially at St John’s Smith Square, and the Chamber Choir sings Evensong at Southwark Cathedral each year. Our successful Music Tours take our performers further afield to locations such as Barcelona, the Netherlands and the Rhineland.
The Centre at St Helen's provides a superb performance space for drama, music and lectures. A hidden gem in the Centre is the new hi-tech sound recording studio. A bespoke drama studio and traditional school hall (the Rowland Brown Hall) enable the School to accommodate a very wide range of performances. Little St Helen’s and Junior School enjoy their own communal halls for smaller scale productions and events. Music has its own base in Fitzwalter House with individual practice rooms as well as larger spaces equipped to meet the needs of classroom music teaching and ever-developing music technology.
